These estate paintings, offered for viewing and spanning a timeline of nearly three decades, represent a summary selection of Robert's work and evolving style. It is often observed by art purveyors and aficionados that the work of an artist is reflective of his inner state. Following Robert's work, from the late 60's through today, one will see that while his approach to subject perspective has remained one of introspection and common sense, he has, we are grateful to witness, preserved and enhanced his unique and poignant ability to convey the weight and complexity of an untold tale in each portrayed scene. In viewing one of Blackcloud's paintings, we can only imagine the story which lies just beyond our perception. The world of the subject, what led to the illuminated moment, and what may follow. Robert's paintings leave you curious, speculative and appreciative for this brief yet enduring glimpse captured in time. It is an attribute of the rare painter who creates the tapestry of a life, yet, chooses only to convey an indelible impression of a select moment from that life. A moment which we may revisit and invent around, as we ourselves move through time. A moment which will forever play upon our sense of wonder. Just as Robert's enriched perception of his subjects has deepened over time, so has his technique matured to gradually communicate the patiently applied layers of color and texture which build the material of his work. Earlier paintings, which guarded mystical, quiet layers holding great secrets, have slowly transitioned into canvases which reveal those same rich layers with the confidence and grace of a master of light - Showing us facets and reflections of what lies within and beneath - demonstrating a greater breadth and scope than seems possible and leaving us searching for more. In the seasons which accompany an artist through time, we are rewarded as the classic and contemporary work of Robert Blackcloud continues to reveal the stunning depth and illusory subtlety of Robert Blackcloud himself. |
