It’s not yet dawn on a cool summer morning as soft lantern light illuminates the far corner of the bunkhouse. There, near the cowboy’s bunk, resides the well-tended tools of his trade. Though most cowboys travel light, none are without their essential gear. Donning boots, chaps and hat, the cowboy hoists his saddle, blanket and bridle and heads with the other hands for the door. Dark outside, the horses are saddled as cowboys mount for the ride to a hearty breakfast at the main house. Today, this cowboy’s a fence rider, and will be for the next four months on this 27,000 acre Texas ranch. His pack horse is outfitted with bedroll and slicker. His saddlebags are stocked with stretchers, coffee, jerky, flour and salt, a harmonica and his sketch pad and pencil. Choosing this desolate work over other duties at ranch headquarters, he won’t see another soul for weeks and miles of cactus flats, dry grasslands and hard hill country. He turns in the saddle and checks the riggin’ on his pack horse, Boss, then leans over the saddle horn and pats his horse, Punch, on the neck. Straight in the saddle, wind at his back, he rides out to greet the open range.
